Inverted Image Search: What is it and how does it work?

Searching for information on the Internet is part of general knowledge thanks to Google and Co. If you see an image you want to learn more about, reverse image search helps out. We explain how to proceed.

A picture is worth a thousand words - but sometimes more info is definitely desired.

The reverse image search is relatively rarely used, which is not because it is particularly complicated, but because many users do not even know the function.

How reverse image search

With a normal image search, you enter a term and get matching images as a result. Reverse image search describes the opposite way: an image serves as the basis and the goal is to get more information about the image. This can be useful in all subject areas, for example, the image of a building whose name you want to find out.On Google, it goes like this:
  1. Open the Google Image Search.
  2. Click in the search box on the right on the camera icon.
  3. Thereupon opens a new search bar, through which you can click on "Upload image" and "Select file" to select the image for which you want more information.
  4. After confirming the upload with "Open", you will receive the results.
  5. Alternatively, the use of image search is also possible by opening the folder with the image on your PC and dragging the image into Google with the help of the mouse.
  6. This will automatically upload the image and display the search results.
These are presented in the form of normal search results: so you see all the URLs with which the image is or could be related according to Google. In many cases, this method brings success, because there is at least one address in the results that really helps.
