Mac: Split View - how to split your screen

If you own a Mac but don't have the option of using a second screen, you can use Split View instead. This splits the screen to your liking and allows you to use and work with different applications or websites at the same time.

How to set Split View on Mac

The advantage of Mac Split View is that you don't have to drag the windows to the correct size yourself each time, they automatically fill part of the screen with one click.
  1. First you have to open one of the programs you want to display in one half of your screen.
  2. Now click the mouse button on the green full screen icon in the top left corner of the window and hold it down until the window shrinks.
  3. Now release the mouse button. The window should automatically fit one half of the screen.
  4. As soon as you click on another program, it will automatically be inserted into the other half of the screen.
  5. To exit the mode again, click on the green full screen button again.
  6. If you want to change the size of the windows, you can do so by simply dragging the line in the middle to the right or to the left. This will enlarge one program and reduce the other accordingly.
Split View: deviations on Macs with newer macOS versionIf you use macOS Catalina or newer, the steps to activate Split View deviate slightly. Thus, after pressing the green full screen icon, it is necessary to select one of the options "Arrange windows on the left side of the screen" or "Arrange windows on the right side of the screen" from the menu.
