Which macOS version do I have? How to find out

Generally, it doesn't matter first of all which version you are currently using on your Mac. However, when it comes to the installation and compatibility of programs and hardware, this point is quite important. Only with the right macOS version can you guarantee that certain programs can be installed and used.

What macOS version do I have? Reading the version

There are two different ways to view the version you are using on your Mac. Both ways will show you the correct version, making the methods differ only by your preference.
  1. Start your Mac and click the Apple icon in the top left of the ribbon.
  2. Next, select the "About this Mac" entry.
  3. In the new window, you will now see the current version of your macOS and can use the button to check for an update if necessary.
  4. Alternatively, read out the version via the terminal.
  5. To do this, start the terminal on your Mac and then enter the command [sw_vers].
  6. Under the entry "ProductVersion" you will see your current version.
  7. To make the command more precise, you better use [sw_vers -productVersion].

MacOS: Update operating system

  1. If you have determined that your version is outdated, an update will help.
  2. Navigieren Sie dazu erneut auf das Apple-Symbol und klicken Sie auf „Systemeinstellungen“.
  3. Wechseln Sie in den Reiter „Softwareupgrade“ und suchen Sie nach neuen Updates.
