Drupal: Core update - simple guide
Drupal is a popular content management system whose core you should update regularly so that everything works exactly as it should. To make sure you don't lose any important website data, it is recommended to make a backup beforehand.
Preparing for updating Drupal Core
The CMS Drupal consists of a core, in German "Kern", and various add-on modules that supplement the application with the functions you need. However, since the core of Drupal provides the basic framework, you need to update it regularly. To create a backup beforehand, so you don't lose any data, use an add-on module:- Install "Backup and Migrate" for Drupal.
- Follow the module's instructions to back up your website.
Perform Update
- Place your website in maintenance mode via "Configuration > Maintenance Mode".
- Download the latest version with which you update the Drupal core and unzip the file on your computer.
- Log into the server via FTP.
- Now remove all data in the root directory except ".htaccess", "robots.txt" and "sites". These three folders must absolutely remain.
- Now copy or move all the files of the downloaded and unzipped Drupal core version to the root directory.
