What is a dual SIM? We explain

More and more providers now offer their smartphone models with dual SIM. How these devices, which offer space for the use of two SIM cards, work and for whom the purchase of such a dual-SIM smartphone is worthwhile, we explain in this article.

This is what is meant by the term Dual-SIM

The term Dual-SIM is mainly used in connection with smartphones. In detail, a dual-SIM smartphone is a device that has two SIM card slots and thus allows you to use two SIM cards at the same time.
  1. If you use two SIM cards in your dual-SIM smartphone, each of the cards has its own phone number under which you can be reached.
  2. Depending on what kind of smartphone model it is, you can use the SIM cards either simultaneously or alternately.
  3. As a rule, dual-SIM is defined via the settings, which SIM card is used for mobile surfing, making calls or writing SMS.
  4. While in a dual-SIM device one SIM card is always the main card with which you can use all the functions of your smartphone, the functions of the second SIM card used are usually limited.

Dual-SIM: In these cases, the use makes sense

Whether buying a smartphone with dual-SIM makes sense for you depends on what you want to use your device for. Thus, the use of a dual-SIM phone is practical to separate your business and private calls, without always having a second phone with you or swapping the SIM card. It is also useful to buy a dual-SIM device if you are frequently abroad and use your mobile device to make calls there, or if you have mobile contracts with multiple providers.
