Android Q: Install apps on SD card

If you have a smartphone or tablet with Android Q, it is possible to install apps on an SD card instead of the internal memory. For this to work, you must first format your SD card accordingly.

Android Q: How to install apps on an SD card

In order to install apps directly on an SD card instead of your Android Q device, you need to convert the card to internal storage beforehand. To do this, open the device's Settings app and tap "Storage".
  1. Then select the SD card and set it up by clicking "Set Up" if you haven't already.
  2. If you have already set up your SD card, tap the icon with the three dots in the top right corner and select "Settings".
  3. In the next window, specify that you want to convert the SD card to internal storage by tapping "Use as internal storage".
  4. Please confirm your selection by tapping "Next" and tap the "Erase and Format" button to use the SD card as internal storage.

This is how you move apps to the SD card of an Android Q device

If you do not want to format your SD card as internal storage but still want to store apps on it, it is alternatively possible to move them to the card. To do so, navigate to "Device" > "Apps" in the device's settings and select the app you want to move. Then tap on your SD card under "Storage" > "Used storage" > "Change" and select "Move" to change the app location.
