The definitions and characteristics are distinguished as follows:
  • The Java Edition refers to the original game, which was released in 2009 only for PC.
  • The Bedrock Edition is based on the Pocket Edition, which was initially developed for mobile devices and later for consoles. Since 2015, however, PCs are also compatible, so that the Bedrock Edition is completely cross-platform.
  • In the Bedrock Edition worlds can be infinitely large, players also have access to Minecraft Realms.
  • In terms of content, the two versions are on the same level. There are differences in details like some controls, since Bedrock Edition is designed for many different devices. One example is the missing F3 menu, also there is no launcher to select the version.
The biggest advantage is nevertheless the crossplay capability. Because of this, Minecraft Bedrock is also interesting for PC gamers, and for those who want to play in multiplayer mode with friends on other platforms.
