Water filters make sense: when you need a filter

The good quality of German tap water is guaranteed by numerous tests. If you still want to use a water filter, you should clean it regularly and also pay attention to some other safety precautions so that you do not consume contaminated water.

Does water need to be filtered in Germany?

Pipe water is very strictly controlled in Germany and the quality is safe for health. Upper limits apply to both the concentration of bacteria and pollutants, so tap water is always of drinking water quality. Nevertheless, it is repeatedly pointed out from various sides that the tests are not strict enough and that water should be reliably filtered. So far, there is no evidence to support these claims. Independent tests, for example by Stiftung Warentest, prove that drinking water is safe. It can only become problematic if your house has pipes that are too old and release lead particles into the drinking water. These should be replaced. In apartment buildings, the landlord is responsible, otherwise you can reduce the rent and take legal action. If you still want to filter your water, you should pay attention to a few points.

This is what you should know about filtering water

  • Change the filter cartridges regularly: When the filter cartridges get dirty, germs accumulate and are released into the water. Thus, the quality of the water is deteriorated, not improved.
  • Buy only filters that have been tested: Some filters release chloride, silver or sodium to the water. Especially in filters for infant formula, this often occurs.
  • Do not let water stand too long: Even filtered water should always be drunk fresh. Otherwise, germs also arise.
