Entering Unicode characters: how it works

Unicode is an encoding system according to the ISO/IEC 10646 standard. Thereby the system includes almost all used text characters and graphic symbols. Thanks to Unicode, you can display any character by entering the correct code.

How to enter characters with Unicode?

With over 100,000 characters covered by the encoding system, it is important to know the particular Unicode to be able to enter the character or letter. To find it out, you can either search for it on the Internet with a search engine of your choice or look it up in a special Unicode table. All you have to do is click on the desired character in the table. A small window will then open, displaying both the Unicode and the HMTL code.
  • First, type the Unicode at the position where you want to enter the character, letter or number. Initially, there is therefore only a combination of numbers.
  • Then press the keys "Alt" + "C" on your keyboard and the Unicode converts to the respective character.
  • For the character of the number 4, the Unicode number is, for example, 0034.
  • Also in Word from Microsoft is a table of special characters under "Insert > Symbols > More symbols". If you click on a character, you will also see the associated Unicode below.
  • Also in most other applications, the Unicode works exactly as explained here.
