Riding an e-scooter without a driver's license - is that possible?

For e-scooters, the rules of the regulation for small electric vehicles apply. This states, for example, that the scooter must not exceed a speed of 20 km/h or whether you need a driver's license. It also states what other conditions must be met in order to participate in road traffic.

Is a driver's license necessary to ride an e-scooter?

Riding an e-scooter is becoming increasingly popular, especially since the publication of the Small Electric Vehicle Regulation, which allows you to participate in road traffic under certain conditions. Regardless of whether you rent an e-scooter from one of the numerous providers or buy a vehicle, you as a driver must also meet some points.
  1. Driving an e-scooter is only allowed from the age of 14 years.
  2. Since a maximum speed of 20 km/h is permitted, there is no helmet requirement. However, wearing a helmet is recommended, since serious accidents can still happen in traffic.
  3. For driving an e-scooter is also no driver's license necessary. However, you may only drive the scooter on the edge of the road if there is no other option, such as bike lanes.
  4. Also note that driving under the influence of alcohol is also strictly prohibited and can entail penalties. The per mille limit is thereby just as high as it is also the case when driving a car.
  5. Although it is very bliebt, driving in pairs on the e-scooter is also prohibited.
