Apply for an international driver's license online
In some non-EU countries you need an international driver's license in addition to your normal driver's license. This is only valid in conjunction with your normal driver's license. This makes it easier for international rental car companies, for example, to identify which cars you are allowed to drive.
How to apply for an international driver's license online
You can only apply for an international driver's license at the relevant road traffic office (Führerscheinstelle). At some offices, you have the option to enter the required information online. However, you still need to make an appointment on site.- For the application, you will need a biometric passport photo and your normal driver's license. If you are still in possession of an old driver's license, it will be converted into a new one. Attention, this leads to extra costs.
- For the international driver's license there are two patterns, one of them is subject to the Road Traffic Convention of 1968. This international driver's license is valid for three years and then must be renewed. The other variant, the driver's license under the Road Traffic Convention of 1926, is only valid for one year.
- Whether you need an international driver's license depends on the country in which you want to drive. In the EEA (European Economic Area), the German driver's license is recognized. However, it may be that the driver's license is still subject to restrictions (Spain, Italy).
- Generally, however, you should carry an international driver's license in any non-EEA country, so that you are always prepared if you are stopped by the police there.
- In Australia and New Zealand, the German driver's license is recognized, as long as you have an officially certified translation with you.
