Windows 10: Enable Linux Bash - how it works

The Anniversary Update of Windows 10 introduced the Linux subsystem, which can now be used in a stable way. You can download various versions of Linux distributions from the Microsoft Store, which will allow you to enable the Linux bash on Windows as well.

How to enable Linux bash on Windows 10?

Unfortunately, you still have to do without a graphical user interface of the Linux subsystem. However, Linux is not integrated as a virtual machine, but directly in Windows 10. This makes it possible to control the entire PC via the Linux bash, which should be of particular interest to administrators and software developers who work with Linux. To use the Linux feature in Windows 10, however, it must first be enabled.
  1. In the bottom left of the Windows 10 search bar, type "Features" and click "Enable or Disable Windows Features."
  2. Near the bottom of the list, you will find the option "Windows Subsystem for Linux". Enable this feature.
  3. Now you need to restart your PC to enable the feature.
  4. Once the restart is complete, open the Microsoft Store and enter the word "Linux" in the search. Now you will see a list of available Linux distributions. Laden Sie sich die herunter, die Sie nutzen möchten.
  5. Beim ersten Start einer Distribution müssen Sie ein Kennwort und einen Administratornamen vergeben und schon können Sie Linux unter Windows nutzen.
