What is tethering? All information

Tethering is a feature that most modern smartphones have to share one's internet connection with other devices. How tethering works exactly and how to set up such a tethering connection on your iPhone and Android smartphone, we explain here.

What is meant by tethering

Tethering is sharing a smartphone's Internet connection with other devices such as a PC or tablet. This allows you to surf the Internet with devices that only have access to the Internet via LAN or WLAN, even without this availability.
  1. In tethering, the smartphone is used as a router that receives the mobile data and forwards it to the computer or another device.
  2. To share the mobile data of your smartphone via tethering, there are three different methods. In addition to a connection via USB cable, tethering is also possible wirelessly via Bluetooth or WLAN.
  3. Although most smartphones now have a tethering function, the use has some disadvantages. In addition to a high consumption of data volume, tethering also reduces the battery life of your device.

How to set up a tethering connection

So if you want to share the mobile data of your smartphone, this goes via USB, Bluetooth and WLAN. To set up the function, please open the settings on your Android smartphone and tap the tethering type you want to use under "Wireless & Networks" > "Tethering & mobile hotspot". If you use an iPhone, you can set up the tethering hotspot under "Settings" > "Personal Hotspot".
