To free up space on your Mac or PC, you can export your iTunes library to an external hard drive. You can do this either directly in iTunes or via the iTunes directory on your computer. Read here what steps are necessary to export iTunes content.

How to export your iTunes library to an external hard drive

Over time, your iTunes library accumulates a large number of songs that take up valuable storage space. Therefore, to free up space on your computer hard drive, it is a good idea to move your iTunes library to an external hard drive.
  1. The quickest way to do this is to launch iTunes, go to "Preferences" > "Advanced" and enable the options "Keep iTunes media folder arrangement" and "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library".
  2. In the advanced settings, then click "Change", select the external hard drive as the new location and confirm with "OK".
  3. Now still navigate to "Library" > "Organize library" and check "Consolidate files".
  4. Your iTunes library will then be moved to the external hard drive and new content will automatically be stored there.

If you want to export your iTunes library to an external hard drive to transfer it to another computer, this is also possible. To do this, search for the folder "iTunes Media" using the Spotlight or Windows search and drag it to the external hard drive.
