WhatsApp: Calls in groups - how it works

If you would rather talk on the phone with your contacts than exchange messages, WhatsApp offers you a function for group calls for this purpose. How to start a conference call with several people and what to keep in mind, we explain in this article.

How to start a group call on WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a messenger service that allows you to send messages to individual contacts or entire groups over the Internet. Sending files, posting photos and messages as status messages, and making phone calls are also features of WhatsApp. Since an update last year, you can now also make group calls with WhatsApp.
  1. To start a group call, first open WhatsApp and go to the chat of the person you want to call first.
  2. In the chat, then start an audio or video call by tapping the "camera icon" or the "handset icon" in the top right corner, respectively.
  3. When the connection with the first contact has been established, please tap on the "Add contact" icon in the top right corner and select another person from your contacts to add them to the group call.

WhatsApp: What to keep in mind when calling groups

Before you start a group call, it is important to know a few things. For example, the number of participants on a group call is limited to a maximum of four people, and a new person can only be added after another participant has previously left. Also, other participants in the conference call are also allowed to add people if they are in their WhatsApp address book.
