Which processor generation? This is what you work with

If your device no longer delivers the technical performance you want, then you don't necessarily have to invest in a new one. A good solution can be to optimize the processor to get the performance you want. But for that, you need to know which processor generation you are currently working with.

How to find out the generation of your processor

There are several ways you can find out which processor was installed in your device. Here's how to do it:
  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard and select System Information. There you will get all the information that is stored about your processor. Write out the number.
  2. If you are using a Linux PC, enter the following command: lscupu / grep "Model name". Subsequently, you will get the number of your processor.
  3. On a macOS device, you need to open the Terminal app and enter the command sysctl -a / grep machdep.cpu.brand_string there. Afterwards, the version is displayed.
  4. The first number that is displayed after the hyphen ensures that you can identify the generation. Because this stands for the installed generation.

Mainboard and processor match

If you want to install a new processor in an older device, then you should check whether the mainboard can communicate with it. Because if the gap in the development is too far advanced, both components do not harmonize with each other. If this is the case, you should think about buying a new device, because it is then the cheaper alternative.
