Photoshop: Filling a Selection - Options

Once you have made a selection in Adobe Photoshop, the software provides you with several tools and options to fill it. For example, you can fill a selection with a color or gradient. For more complex tasks, the image editor offers the content-based fill function.

Filling a selection in Photoshop - how it works

Filling a selection in Photoshop with a simple color or gradient works with just a few clicks. Follow these steps:
  1. First, load the image or graphic into Photoshop where you want to make a change.
  2. Now select one of the selection tools and highlight the area you want to fill. Make sure that you have activated the correct layer.
  3. After you have created a selection, right-click in the selected area. Select "Fill Area" from the context menu.
  4. A dialog box opens where you choose the fill color and fill method.
  5. Finally click "OK".
You also have the option of filling the selection using the Fill or Gradient tool.

Content-based filling

In addition to simple colors or gradients, you can also fill a selection in Photoshop using content-based filling. Photoshop then automatically calculates a fill based on the surrounding areas of the selection and the data in the image. To use the feature, simply select Content-Based in the Fill With dialog box.
