What is a DNS server? What's behind the term

When you want to access a web page on the Internet, it is usually necessary to enter a suitable URL in the address bar of your browser. Since web pages can be accessed with both a URL and an IP address, DNS servers are needed to assign the correct IP to a URL.

What is a DNS server

In order to access websites on the Internet, you need a suitable browser. Here you can choose from numerous different variants, such as Firefox, Chrome or Opera. In the browser, you then enter a URL or IP address in the address line. These are then forwarded to a DNS server that processes the information.
  1. DNS stands for "Domain Name System".
  2. Since you usually only know the URL and not the IP address with which the web pages are accessible, the DNS server assigns the correct IP to a URL.
  3. Once you have entered a URL in the address bar of your browser and confirmed it with the Enter key, it is forwarded to a DNS server.
  4. This name server searches for a matching mapping to forward you to the IP address that matches the URL. If no mapping is found, then the request is forwarded to another DNS server.
