Baldur's Gate 3: All playable races at a glance

As a true old-school role-playing game, Baldur's Gate 3 starts with character creation. And here you have a variety of options to choose from. Read what races are available.

More choice not necessary: Baldur's Gate 3 is by no means lacking in playable races.

There are a total of 16 playable races in Baldur's Gate 3. However, some are divided into sub-races, which affects strengths and weaknesses.

Baldur's Gate 3: These races and subdivisions exist

The selection looks like this:
  • Humans: All-rounders, balanced strengths
  • Elves: High Elves (good for magic) / Wood Elves (fast, agile, good archers)
  • Half Elves: Half High Elf (good for mix of magic and melee) / Half Wood Elf (nimble, agile) / Half Drow (stealth, cunning)
  • Githyanki (astral warriors, strong)
  • Drow: Seldarine Drow / Lolth Drow (differences only in reputation, not in talents)
  • Dwarves: Hill Dwarves (wise and robust, good as tanks) / Shield Dwarves (strong, cause high damage)
  • Halflings: Light-footed Halfling (charismatic, stealthy) / Stocky Halfling (sturdy, resilient)
  • Tieflings: Asmodeus Tieflings (strong mages or warlocks) / Mephistopheles Tieflings (arcane magic) / Zariel Tieflings (strong melee fighters)
Taken together with the large differences in appearance and story background, this creates a wide playing field in which you can create a character exactly to your liking.
