What is Multiboxing? We explain the extreme gaming phenomenon

In the world of online gaming, sometimes very special ideas come up. Among them is undoubtedly the so-called multiboxing, which became popular in World of Warcraft many years ago.

Special preference: multiboxing is a challenge on several levels.

For most players, even playing with one character requires maximum concentration. Multiboxers go directly several steps further.

What is multiboxing and how does it work?

In multiboxing, a player controls several characters at once.
  • For this, certain technical requirements are necessary, on the one hand for the games running in parallel, which can be open on one or more computers, and also for the displays and input methods.
  • This often involves the use of special software as well as macros. This allows the player, for example, to send a command to multiple characters at the same time.
  • In addition to the challenge itself, the appeal of multiboxing is that players can tackle challenges all by themselves, which normally require a group, such as a dungeon or even a raid.
  • Since multiboxing in World of Warcraft is practiced to this day, it was recently back in the headlines. Blizzard announced namely tightened guidelines concerning the additional software for inputs - external programs are to be forbidden in the future, which will make life drastically more difficult for multiboxing players.
As a reason, Blizzard stated that certain mechanisms harm the game and are therefore not desired. The multiboxing itself, however, is still allowed. It should be remembered that an account with an active (and therefore paid) subscription is required for each character. Apart from the hardware and software equipment are thus also the running costs not to be underestimated.
