Word: Format table of contents - how to do it

Word already has some templates to help you create a table of contents. In order to make changes afterwards, it is necessary to format the table of contents. How to do the formatting in Word, we explain in this article.

How to insert a formatted table of contents in Word

If the table of contents of your document has to meet certain requirements, Word offers you various functions to format it. The easiest way to do this is to do the formatting already when inserting the table of contents.
  1. To insert a table of contents in Word, first place the cursor where you want the directory to be inserted.
  2. In Word's menu, then navigate to the "References" tab and click on "Table of Contents" on the far left.
  3. Thereupon a selection menu opens, in which you can choose a template, create a manual directory or open another window for formatting the table of contents.
  4. To format your table of contents individually, please click on the option "Insert custom table of contents" and set the appropriate values.

If you have already inserted a table of contents, it can also be formatted afterwards. To do the formatting in Word, please call up the page with the table of contents and select it with the mouse. Now switch to the "References" tab and click on "Table of contents". Then select the option "Insert table of contents" to open a new window for formatting.
