Windows: Change drive letter - this is how it is possible

When you reboot your Windows or format your drive, Windows automatically assigns a letter to it. If you want to set the label more uniquely or change it for some other reason, Windows provides you with a function to change the letter at any time through Disk Management.

How to change the drive letter in Windows

When you format your drive, it is automatically assigned a letter. If you want to set the letters of your drives yourself, then you can change this at any time via Disk Management in Windows. Changing the letters may cause problems with certain programs. These may have to be reinstalled afterwards to fix the errors. In some cases, it is also sufficient to change the settings of the application.

1. To change the drive letter, it is first necessary to open Disk Management. To do this, press the key combination "Windows" key + "R".
2. The "Run" dialog will now open. Geben Sie in das Textfeld „diskmgmt.msc“ ein und bestätigen Sie dies über die Schaltfläche „Ok“.
3. In der Datenträgerverwaltung klicken Sie mit der rechten Maustaste auf das Laufwerk, von dem Sie den Buchstaben ändern möchten.
4. Im neuen Menü klicken Sie nun auf die Option „Laufwerkbuchstaben und -Pfade ändern“.
5. Klicken Sie anschließend im neuen Fenster auf „Ändern“.
6. Nun können Sie einen neuen Buchstaben aus der Liste auswählen. Hierbei ist es wichtig darauf zu achten, dass dieser noch nicht vergeben ist.
7. Bestätigen Sie die Warnung mit „Ja“.
