SVERWEIS: Other worksheet - how to proceed

With the SVERWEIS function you have the possibility in Microsoft Excel to search for any values within a table. It is also possible here to search a table on another worksheet. Learn what you need to keep in mind when using the function.

How to search another worksheet with the SVERWEIS

With the help of the SVERWERIS function, you can search not only tables that are on the same worksheet as the function. While specifying the search range, you also have the option to define a cross-worksheet search range. The syntax of the SVERWEIS function looks like this:"=SVERWEIS(searchcriterion;matrix;columnindex;[sort-row-order])"
  • The searchcriterion specifies which value in the first column of the matrix or table should be searched.
  • The "matrix" argument specifies the search range within a table that you want to search. It does not matter on which worksheet the search range is located. Switch, while you enter the matrix in the formula, on the corresponding worksheet and select the desired table.
  • Enter as an argument the column index of the column from which to be searched in the table. Note that it is counted from left to right and that the function can only output values to the right of the search column.
  • About the sort order, you specify with the argument TRUE or FALSE whether the table is sorted in ascending order. So if you specify the argument FALSE, you are telling Excel that the table is unsorted.
Note that with the SVERWEIS function there is always only one search criterion and that the function always outputs only the first applicable value.
