Which Kindle books can Alexa read aloud?

Amazon's voice assistant Alexa can not only read audiobooks from Audible to you, but also e-books from your Kindle library thanks to text-to-speech technology. Learn which e-books can be read aloud and what to do if Alexa's reading feature doesn't work as usual.

These e-books can Alexa read aloud

Whether Alexa can read a Kindle book aloud depends on several factors. First and foremost, though, it depends on whether the title has text-to-speech enabled.
  • Most books you'll find in the Kindle store have read-aloud mode enabled.
  • Kindle books you've borrowed from a Kindle lending library can also be read aloud by Alexa, as long as text-to-speech is enabled.
  • In addition to compatible books from the lending library and Kindle store, Alexa can also read aloud corresponding titles borrowed as part of Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading.
  • Furthermore, Kindle books with active read aloud mode can also be read aloud that have been shared via the family library.

Alexa no longer reads books aloud?

From time to time, it may happen that Alexa no longer reads books aloud as usual. In such a case, disconnect the Echo device from the power supply and wait a few minutes before reconnecting the device. If Alexa still does not read the book aloud, check the compatibility of the Kindle book on the product page and look for the item "Text-to-Speech (read aloud mode)" there. If the feature is not supported, it is marked as "Not Enabled".
