iMac won't boot: How to get it going again

If your iMac won't boot anymore, that's no reason to panic yet. Often, you can fix the problems yourself by checking both the graphics card and the hard drive. If the iMac boots in safe mode, you can also use this as a starting point to solve software defects.

iMac won't boot: first aid tips

Similar to when the MacBook won't boot, easy-to-solve causes can also be responsible for the iMac not booting.
  1. First remove all external devices. They sometimes prevent the computer from booting without errors.
  2. If this does not help, first reset the NVRAM by holding down the key combination "Command" + "Alt" + "R "+ "P" directly after booting until the startup sound is heard for the second time.
  3. Reset the SMC. To do this, turn off the iMac and disconnect it from the power for 15 seconds. Plug the power back in, wait another five seconds and turn the power back on.
  4. In addition, a safe boot can solve the problem. Restart the iMac and hold down the Shift key while it boots up. This will take longer than a normal reboot.

Safe Mode and Disk Utility

If these steps do not lead to a solution, turn on iMac again and start Safe Mode. With this step, iMac will automatically analyze the system errors in the software. With the help of Disk Utility, you can also repair individual faulty partitions of the hard drive. To do this, right-click a partition in Safe Mode and select "Check Volume." If the iMac still does not boot, contact Apple customer service in this case.
