Does Alexa require Amazon Prime? All info

Alexa is Amazon's smart home assistant. It can be used to remind you of appointments or simply control various other devices. However, interested parties are wondering if Alexa requires an Amazon Prime membership.

Do you need Amazon Prime to use Alexa?

If you want to use the Alexa voice assistant, a Prime membership is not required, it just comes with some extras. However, you will need a free Amazon account to use Alexa. You need it anyway to be able to order an Amazon Dot or Echo.
  1. To create an Amazon account, first go to Amazon's page in the browser.
  2. In the top right corner, you will find the "Sign in" button. If you click on it, you will also find the option to register.
  3. Enter your name, email address and a secure password. After that, click on "Create your Amazon account".
To connect Alexa to your account, the first thing you need to do is download the Alexa app to your smartphone. In the app, you then sign in with your free Amazon account.

These options are missing

Amazon Alexa can be used almost to its full extent - even without Amazon Prime. Essentially, you only have to live with two restrictions:
  • You can not place orders with Amazon via Alexa.
  • You can not listen to music via Prime Music. However, TuneIn or Spotify, for example, will work instead.
If you're not sure whether you own an Amazon Echo or an Echo Dot, comparing the two devices can help you tell them apart.
