Networks are something we encounter again and again in everyday life. In addition to the Internet as a worldwide network or internal company networks, so-called intranets, you can also set up a local network at home. Read here how such a local network works and how to set it up on your Windows PC.

What is a network

A network refers to the connection between at least two devices. This can be a PC or laptop, as well as mobile devices or game consoles. Usually, the devices in a network are connected via a router, through which they also access the Internet. However, there are also so-called peer-to-peer networks, in which the devices communicate directly, i.e. without an intermediary.

How to set up a network

If you want to set up a local network, you must first make sure that your router is connected to the power grid and properly configured. It is also necessary that your computer is already connected to the router via LAN cable or WLAN.

1. To set up a home network, please press the "Windows key" and the "Pause key" on your Windows PC at the same time.
2. Thereupon a new window will open, in which you please click "Change settings" under "Settings for computer name, domain and workgroup".
3. Klicken Sie anschließend erneut auf „Ändern“ und legen Sie unter „Arbeitsgruppe“ einen Namen für Ihr Netzwerk fest, bevor Sie mit „OK“ bestätigen.
4. Abschließend ist es noch notwendig, die Freigabefunktion auf Ihrem Computer zu aktivieren, indem Sie in den Einstellungen zu „Netzwerk“ > „Status“ > „Verbindungseigenschaften ändern“ gehen und die Option „Dieser PC soll gefunden werden“ aktivieren.
