Ubuntu: Empty trash - how to do it

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution. This is one of the most widely used distributions and was released in October 2004. As with other operating systems, there is a recycle bin that you can use to delete or also restore various files.

How to empty your recycle bin in Ubuntu

When you delete a file via your file manager in Ubuntu, it is first moved to the recycle bin. Only after you empty the Recycle Bin will the files be completely removed from your Ubuntu system. Note, however, that this does not apply to network drives, folders shared via the home network, and folders mounted with Samba or SFTP.
  1. First open the terminal in Ubuntu.
  2. Now enter the command "sudo rm -rf ~/.local/share/Trash/*" and then press Enter.
  3. You will now be asked for your password. Enter it and confirm again with the Enter key.
  4. All files will then be deleted from your Trash.

How to restore your data

If you want to restore the data that was previously moved to the Trash, this is also possible.
  1. To do this, first open the Trash.
  2. In the context menu, you will now find the "Restore" button. Klicken Sie auf diese.
  3. Die Datei wird an dem Ort wiederhergestellt, an dem diese zuvor gespeichert war. Gibt es diesen Ordner nicht mehr, wird auch dieser wiederhergestellt.
