What is SaaS? The explanation of Software as a Service

In the age of the Internet, more and more services are being outsourced to browser applications. This process is called SaaS (Software as a Service). The software no longer has to be installed by the customer, but is provided over the Internet. The word "service" refers not only to software, but also to other services.

What exactly is SaaS?

With SaaS, a wide variety of services are provided to customers directly over the Internet without having to install software on their own PCs beforehand.
  1. The reason why SaaS is becoming increasingly popular is that various factors occur together. These include, for example, better access to high-speed networks (network expansion), standardization of technologies (same protocols) and the popularity of web-like interfaces. In addition, mobile devices are becoming increasingly important.
  2. SaaS includes not only software, hardware is also provided by Amazon, for example, and can be rented online. Even your own PC you can operate completely online, for this DaaS (Desktop as a Service) is used.

SaaS for companies

SaaS offer especially companies a decisive advantage, but also a decisive disadvantage. The company saves on infrastructure costs and can easily scale its systems (i.e., request more or less). However, at the same time, the company makes itself dependent on a provider and must contractually define exactly which data the provider is allowed to keep and which is company property. Moreover, there is no tailored solution, only a standardized one.
