Online banking: SEPA countries at a glance

Thanks to the SEPA system, transfers to other EU countries are not complicated either. In addition, even more states belong to the payment traffic area. Our guide has the overview.

Transfer abroad without additional fees: This is the purpose of SEPA.

The global economy has become increasingly fast and borderless over the years. Features such as SEPA contribute to this.

SEPA: These countries belong to it

In total, the SEPA area comprises 36 countries. These can be divided into different categories:
  • The bulk are the EU countries, whose number after Brexit is 27.
  • The next group are the four countries that do not belong to the EU, but to the European Economic Area (EEA). These are Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and the United Kingdom.
  • Then come six countries that are not part of the EEA, but still participate in SEPA payments. These are Switzerland, San Marino, Vatican City, Andorra and Monaco.
This classification helps with the overview, but is not important for daily payment transactions. After all, unification is the basic idea of SEPA; transfers between all participating countries thus take place under the same conditions.
