What is Miracast? The wireless standard simply explained

You may have seen a note on a device like a TV that it is compatible with Miracast. But what is Miracast? Roughly explained, it's a technology that allows wireless streaming from one device to another.

How Miracast works

Miracast is a peer-to-peer wireless standard. This means that you can stream from one device to another without connecting the devices via cable. An example is, for example, that you transfer videos from your smartphone to your TV via Miracast. Through Miracast, you need neither a WLAN access on the TV nor a cable between smartphone and TV or a LAN connection to the router.
  • Miracast is a wireless standard developed by the WiFi Alliance.
  • With Miracast, you can transfer image and sound between compatible devices with up to 1080p and 5.1 sound.
  • Devices that support Miracast include, for example, smartphones, tablets, Blu-Ray players, TVs and computers with Windows or Mac as operating system.
  • If, for example, your smartphone is compatible, but your TV is not, you can retrofit Miracast via a USB interface on the TV with a dongle.
