ISO is a name for the installation files of different operating systems. If you want to save an ISO file on a USB stick to use it as a boot medium, this is only possible after formatting the USB stick first. We show you which tools you can use to make your USB stick bootable.

ISO on USB stick: These are the prerequisites

In order to save the ISO file of an operating system like Linux or Windows on a USB stick and to boot your computer from this stick afterwards, it is necessary to make the USB stick bootable beforehand. To format the USB stick accordingly, you will need an additional program such as "Unetbootin", "Rufus", "ISO to USB" or the "Windows USB/DVD Tool", which you can download for free from the Internet. In addition, it is necessary that you change the boot order in your computer's BIOS so that the computer boots from USB and not from the internal hard drive.

ISO: How to make your USB stick bootable

The correct procedure to make your USB stick bootable depends on the program you use. If you have a Windows PC and use the Windows USB tool, the following steps are necessary:

1. First download the ISO file of the Windows version you want to transfer via USB stick.
2. After that, also install the Windows USB/DVD Download Tool on your PC and start it.
3. Now please select the previously downloaded ISO file under "Browse" and confirm with "Next".
4. After clicking on "USB device" please select the drive of your USB stick before you start the formatting of the stick with "Begin copying".
