USB stick: test speed - this is how it works

Between theory and practice you have to decide also for the speed of your USB stick. Although many manufacturers specify a certain speed, but this turns out to be lower in practice. Simply test yourself via the PC how fast your stick works.

How to test your own USB stick for speed

Generally, you can assume that USB stickswith larger memory capacity work faster than sticks with less memory.
  1. Connect the USB stick you want to test to your PC.
  2. Download the free tool "CrystalDiskMark Portable" to perform the test and set it up.
  3. A new window will appear. Next to the "All" button, the parameters of the test are specified: the number of test rows and the drive letter of the USB stick.
  4. The more tests are performed, the more accurate the result will be. However, the test takes longer accordingly.
  5. Finally, start the test via the "All" button.

This is what you can deduce from the result

A USB stick transfers larger files faster. This is also true for other storage media. So if you transfer a lot of smaller files, it will take you longer. In addition, it is not uncommon that the actual measured speed of the USB stick differs from the theoretical speed.
