Meta, formerly Facebook, has chosen its technical partner to create the Metaverse, the ambitious project announced a few days ago by Mark Zuckerberg
The historic "war" between the two chip giants, AMD and Intel, opens a new chapter. AMD has announced that it has concluded an agreement with Meta, Mark Zuckerberg's company, for the "technical" realization of the Metaverse, the huge virtual universe populated by avatars announced by the number one of Facebook.
The news has made AMD's stock market value soar, whose shares have shot up 11% in a few hours overshadowing Intel's historical rivals, who were forced to take yet another hard blow. Already for some years in fact, CPUs, GPUs and more generally AMD's chips enjoy a certain technical superiority over the components produced by Intel, and the agreement closed with Meta will probably cause a strengthening of the leading position of the Americans of AMD, which will boast to be the technical partner of the ambitious project of Zuckerberg. The agreement is the umpteenth "heavy" closed in a few years, which adds up to those in place with Google, Amazon and other companies of a certain caliber.
The structure of the Metaverse will be titanic
The idea unveiled by Mark Zuckerberg a few days ago will require a titanic structure in terms of computational capacity of the machines, which by force of things will have to have CPU and GPU powerful, but also RAM and SSD must be very fast.
On the other hand, if a powerful PC is needed to run an advanced game in terms of graphics, think about what will be needed to support the Metaverse that Zuckerberg has in mind, a real digital universe in which a continuous flow of several thousand people per day, perhaps simultaneously, connect to the same virtual place to interact in real time.
Zuckerberg's Metaverse, in short, represents an ambitious idea also from the point of view of technical feasibility, that is, of machines - servers - that keep up the whole infrastructure 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, for years. The men in charge of putting on the Metaverse have however identified the ideal partner for the chips in AMD, that has proudly communicated its partnership with Meta, the company that is head of the social of the "Zuckerberg galaxy" that before was called simply Facebook and that from some day is called, exactly, Meta.
Focus on pollution
AMD has announced that its chips Epyc to very high performances presented yesterday have been realized collaborating with Meta. From these words someone could deduce that they are the clues to realize on a technical level the Metaverse project, but AMD has also announced a new range of chips for super-computers and cloud servers, so RAM, GPU and anything else super powerful and fast that could be the basis of the projects of Meta ex Facebook.
An infrastructure like the one that will be realized, with CPU, GPU, chips, SSD, etc. powerful and fast, will require a lot of energy and therefore potentially could pollute a lot. An AMD executive confided to some insiders that Meta engineers are focusing their efforts on power optimization, so as to impact as little as possible on the delicate energy balance of the planet.
