Three new SoCs coming from Qualcomm, the goal is simple: to propose the best chip for each Android smartphone market segment.
Snapdragon 775, Snapdragon 788 and Snapdragon 888 4G, three are the new SoC that Qualcomm will launch in the coming months confirming with facts also in 2021 its well-known industrial policy: to cover the entire market, from the very low end to the top of the range premium.
SoC 775, 788 and 888 4G are in fact three platforms on which smartphone manufacturers can build very different solutions, but all valid in their respective market segment. The most interesting will perhaps be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 775 platform, heir to Snapdragon 765/765G. That is, the platform that in 2020 revolutionized the medium-high end of the market and still in this early 2021 is making happy millions of buyers of smartphones priced at 500 euros. Qualcomm Snapdragon 775: cosa ne sappiamo
Le informazioni su Qualcomm Snapdragon 775 provengono attualmente da un canale Telegram, chiamato XiaomiUI, sul quale è stato pubblicato un presunto documento interno a Qualcomm in cui si parla della piattaforma SM7350, che sarà probabilmente commercializzata con il nome di Snapdragon 775/775G. Ricordiamo che, in casa Qualcomm, le versioni “G" dei SoC sono quelle ottimizzate per il gaming.
Come Snapdragon 765 ha portato, l’anno scorso, la compatibilità con il 5G nella fascia media anche il 775/775G porterà una novità in questo segmento di mercato: il processo costruttivo a 5 nm, che consuma poca energia e scalda molto meno del processo a 7 nm (adottato ad esempio su Snapdragon 865, top di gamma 2020).
According to rumors, the new SoC will have support for fast LPDDR5 RAM at 3,2000 MHz and UFS 3.1 storage. 5G connectivity will be complete, with the ability to hook up to both millimeter and Sub-6GHz waves.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 788: what we know
The Snapdragon 788 will be the younger brother of Snapdragon 888 and will be dedicated to mid-to-high-end smartphones, those with prices around 600-700 euros (by now the top of the range have launch prices well above 800 euros).
Like its predecessor it will be built at 5 nm, will be compatible with 3.2 GHz LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1 memories, will have the same ISP Spectra 570 photo processor. La differenza con lo Snapdragon 775, quindi, potrebbe limitarsi sostanzialmente alla frequenza di clock massima delle CPU e della GPU Kryo 600, utilizzate su entrambi i processori.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G: cosa ne sappiamo
Il Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G sarà in pratica un 888 senza il supporto al 5G e questo ha stupito molti. Tuttavia le indiscrezioni sul suo conto vengono dal giornale tedesco Winfuture.de, solitamente molto attendibile, e quindi sono più che credibili.
Anche se apparentemente questo processore potrebbe non avere senso, in realtà il senso ce l’ha: la diffusione delle reti 5G non è ancora a livello così capillare e molti potenziali acquirenti di smartphone top di gamma premium potrebbero non ricevere il segnale 5G prima del 2022.
Togliere il modem 5G, quindi, potrebbe non avere alcuno svantaggio a fronte di un prezzo di vendita arrotondato in basso e, dulcis in fundo, un consumo di batteria inferiore visto che i modem 5G consumano parecchio.
