Excel: How to square a number

Microsoft Excel offers you several ways to perform calculations. If you want to square a number, this is possible in several ways. So you can use the power function, which is represented by a caret character "^". Here, the formula N^2 is used, where "N" is replaced by the number to be squared.

1. To square a number in the same cell, select the corresponding cell and add the term ^2.
2. Then press the Enter key so that the result is displayed in the cell.
3. Alternatively, you can also use a reference when squaring. To do this, select an empty cell and type the formula = cell ^2. Replace cell thereby by the reference to the cell in which the number to be squared is located.
4. Confirm your input afterwards also with this method with the "Enter key" to get the result.

Square number: This further formula offers Excel

In addition to the power function, Excel offers another method to square numbers with the power function. This uses the syntax POTENCE (number; power), in which "number" must be replaced by the number to be squared and "power" by the exponent. While the value 2 is used as the exponent when squaring a number, the power function is also suitable for exponentiating numbers with other values.
