Windows 7: Test RAM with diagnostic tool - how to do it

The RAM consists of millions of small memory cells that are responsible for making important data quickly available. You can find out whether a defect has crept in somewhere by testing the RAM under Windows 7.

How to test RAM: Instructions for Windows 7

The RAM or main memory can show various errors over time. If you want to know if everything is working correctly or if a defect has crept in, you can test the RAM in Windows 7 in the following way:
  1. First, open the Memory Diagnostics tool. You can find this most easily by clicking on the Windows button at the bottom left and entering the term in the search box.
  2. Click the appropriate entry to open the tool.
  3. Select "Restart now and search for problems" here. It is best to manually close all programs you have opened beforehand and save your work in documents so that no progress is lost.
  4. Now wait until Windows 7 restarts. The tool will then inform you if errors were found during the RAM test or if everything is working correctly.
If errors were found or the test did not come to a meaningful result, you can perform an extended test run. To do this, run the memory diagnostic tool as described above. In the test screen, press F1 and select "Advanced" in the test composition. Increase the run count here so that you get a more accurate result.
