Clear RAM: Windows 10 - how to make room in RAM

If you use many memory-consuming programs at the same time, your RAM may eventually become overwhelmed. Your PC only reacts to clicks with a delay. You can remedy this by clearing the working memory in Windows 10.

How to empty RAM via Task Manager?

If the performance of your Windows 10 PC is hiccuping, the first step you can take is to close programs that are running in the background and taking up a large amount of RAM. This works as follows:

1. Open the Task Manager with the key combination "CTRL + Shift + ESC" and click on "More details" in the left corner of the window. Under the first tab "Processes" all currently running programs are now shown.
2. In the column "Memory" you can see which programs require particularly much RAM. To do this, click on the corresponding line and then on "End Task" in the lower right corner of the window.

How do you empty the memory with a script?

Some programs reserve memory, although they do not need it at all. With a trick you can free this space:

1. Type "Editor" into the Windows search and open the program.
2. In the text area, type for example "FreeMem = Space(32000000)". The number in the parenthesis represents the amount of memory you free when you run the script. It is recommended to stick with smaller numbers to avoid causing a system crash.
3. Save the file under "Save As" with the extension ".VBS" in any location.
4. Double-click on the saved file to empty the memory by the specified amount.
