Windows 10: Move programs and make room

If you run out of space on your hard drive, you either have to uninstall programs or move them to another hard drive. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when doing so, and for some programs you won't be able to avoid reinstalling them.

How moving programs works in Windows 10

If you need to make room on your hard drive, you can swap out data and programs to another built-in disk or else to an external drive. Windows apps and games from the Windows Store can usually be easily moved to a new location via the Apps menu. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open "Apps". To do this, click on the Windows icon, then on the gear icon and then on the "Apps" menu.
  2. You will now see a list of all installed programs, apps and applications on your system. From the list, select the app or game you want to move with a left click.
  3. Click "Move" and select the new location.
For classic programs or apps that are not from the Windows Store, you often can not avoid a reinstallation. You can also find the program under "Apps" and uninstall it. Then reinstall it to the correct location.

Move games? This tool can help

If you don't get your games from the Windows Store but via Steam, the SteamMover tool can be a welcome help. Namely, the tool allows you to move installed games to another partition or hard drive. This way you avoid downloading and installing them again.
