Internal hard disk is not recognized - what to do?
It can happen that an internal hard disk is not recognized by your operating system. Most often, the reason is that the hard drive has not been partitioned and therefore no partition is displayed. However, there can be many other reasons behind the problem besides formatting.
Why is the hard drive not showing up?
- In Windows, simply go to the search bar at the bottom left and type "Create and format hard drive partitions". In the window that opens, right-click on the hard drive that is not recognized and select "New Simple Volume". Follow the steps of the wizard and make all the necessary settings.
- Alternatively, you may need to assign a new drive letter to the hard drive. Press "Windows" key + "R", type "diskmgmt.msc" and press Enter. Right-click the drive and select "Change drive letters and paths..." > "Change." Choose a new drive letter and follow the instructions.
- Another possibility is that the hard drive is not properly connected to the motherboard. Turn off your PC and check if the SATA cable is properly connected to the hard drive and the motherboard. Also check if the hard drive is plugged into the power supply.
- If the hard drive is making noise, there may also be a defect in the hardware. Plug it into another computer and check whether the hard drive is recognized under it. If it is not recognized, this strongly suggests that the hard drive is damaged. In this case, you should buy a new hard drive and dispose of the old properly.
