Toshiba hard drive is not recognized: What you can do

Toshiba is one of the only three hard drive manufacturers still active in the world. However, even Toshiba's disks are not immune to errors. If a hard drive from the provider is not recognized by your PC, however, there is usually a solution.

What you can do if your Toshiba hard drive is not recognized

Most of the time, hard drives that are not recognized are external media. There can be different reasons why an external hard drive is not recognized. Some of them are easy to solve, others require more effort:
  1. First of all, you need to check if you have connected your Toshiba hard drive to your PC on the correct USB port. Many modern hard drives are only compatible with USB 3.0 ports. So you absolutely have to use such a port when connecting.
  2. It is also important with the port used that the interface is either blue or marked with the lettering "Superseed (SS)". Otherwise, a connection between hard drive and PC is not possible.
  3. With the disk management of Windows, you can check whether your PC recognizes your external hard drive at all. You open the disk management with the key combination [Windows] and [R]. Then type "diskmngmt.msc" in the dialog bar.
  4. If it is not initialized, right-click on the hard disk in Disk Management to select "Initialize" and follow the instruction.

Reinstall hard disk

If the hard disk is also not recognized in Disk Management, continue to check the following:
  1. Open the Device Manager by right-clicking on the Windows icon. Uninstall your hard drive there via right-click and install it again.
  2. If this does not help, install the drivers manually. You can find them on the Toshiba website.
  3. A defective cable can also be the cause that the Toshiba hard drive is not recognized.
