There are two generations of Apple Pencil in total. The first-generation Pencil charges via a Lightning connector and is round in shape, while the second-generation Pencil is square in shape and charges wirelessly. If you want to buy a second-generation Apple Pencil, you need to note that it is not compatible, especially with older devices.

1. The second-generation Pencil can be magnetically attached to the side of the iPad. Note, however, that this is only compatible with iPad Pros from 2018. These usually have an 11-inch or a 12.9-inch display.
2. The first generation of the pencil does not yet have a magnetic clip. In addition, no gestures are supported on the pen. However, this is possible with the second generation. So you can switch between functions within apps by double-tapping the pen.
