How does WiFi Direct work? How to use it

In addition to WLAN, Bluetooth and NFC, many modern devices are now equipped with another technology called WiFi Direct. WiFi Direct is used to exchange data between compatible devices over short distances. You can find out exactly how WiFi Direct works here.

How WiFi Direct technology works

WiFi Direct is a WiFi Alliance certificate and is used to establish a wireless connection between compatible devices. In addition to mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, many laptops, digital cameras and Bluray players are WiFi Direct certified and can connect without an Internet connection, modem or router. If you have activated WiFi Direct on your devices, you can use the function to exchange data. WiFi Direct works similarly to Bluetooth, but has a greater range of up to 200 meters.

How to set up WiFi Direct

In order to use WiFi Direct for data exchange, it is first necessary to set up the function on both devices. To do so, enable the WLAN and WiFi Direct on both the transmitting and receiving devices.
  1. After that, select the file you want to send on the transmitting device and click the three dots to open the context menu.
  2. Tap there on the option "WiFi Direct" to select this as a transfer method and wait until your smartphone has searched for other WiFi Direct capable devices.
  3. From the list displayed, then select the device to which the data should be transferred and confirm the message "Invitation to connect" on the second device to start the transfer.
