LaTeX: Insert footnote - safeguard your work

Not only when writing scientific papers, but also when writing other documents, it is essential that you clearly name your sources. Only by inserting footnotes will you protect yourself and your work from plagiarism. We'll show you how easy it is to safeguard yourself.

How to set a footnote

A footnote is not only quickly set in LaTeX, but is also optimally inserted into the formatting by the program itself.
  1. A major advantage of LaTeX, especially compared to other word processing programs, is that the program numbers the footnotes independently. So you always keep track.
  2. The command to set a footnote in LaTeX is /footnote(text of footnote).
  3. Place the command within the body text at the point where you want to insert a source.
  4. Insert the source in the form of the chosen citation in the parenthesis and close the parenthesis.
  5. Once you have confirmed your command with Enter or Enter, the footnote including the corresponding number will appear on the bottom page of the document.

Individualize the numbering

It may be the case that you want to use or refer to a specific number for a footnote. Then you have to use the command /footnote(number)(text of footnote). Be aware that LaTeX automatically counts on and does not include the footnote number in the counts. Thus you should leave yourself a thought support, for example in the form of a comment, in order not to get confused.
