Linux: Set up OpenVPN - simple guide

For a secure connection, you can set up OpenVPN on Linux. The secure network ensures that data is encrypted during virtual communication, for example, making it absolutely tap-proof.

Install and set up: OpenVPN on Linux

Some Linux packages come with a VPN client pre-installed that you use to set up the VPN tunnel. You can check this in the distribution. If the client is not present, download it from OpenVPN.net and install it. Then set up OpenVPN on Linux.
  1. First, click on the network icon in the taskbar and select "Network Connections".
  2. Under "Add" you now create "OpenVPN".
  3. Here you enter various information. What you need to enter exactly depends on which VPN provider you have chosen. On the website of the provider you will find all the relevant data. Some also offer certificate files, through which you can automatically set up the VPN connection.

How to use the secure connection

It is best to start OpenVPN on Linux whenever you just want to use a particularly secure connection.
