Using FritzBox as OpenVPN gateway

Without much effort you can use your FritzBox as OpenVPN gateway. For this, you only need to follow three simple steps to subsequently have an encrypted private network. What's especially pleasant is that you don't need a lot of knowledge in the field of IT for this process.

Prepare your FritzBox

Before you can start setting up OpenVPN, you need to prepare your FritzBox.
  1. The first step is to log into the FritzBox and release the UDP port 1194.
  2. Now assign a fixed IP address to the desired FritzBox.
  3. Now you still connect your FritzBox to the Internet. To do this, you must select "MyFritz" and order an account or log into an existing account.
  4. You can now access your FritzBox from anywhere on the web.

How to set up your FritzBox as an OpenVPN gateway

The prerequisite for this process is that you have prepared your FritzBox.
  1. Download and install the OpenVPN package on your PC before generating the key file.
  2. You then need to copy this file to the OpenVPN folder, which can be found in the "Program Files" folder.
  3. Configure the settings by opening the editor and inserting the line "dev do ifconfig 10.8.0.1 10.8.0.2 secret static.key". Enter the address of your FritzBox and save the file as "client". Add the file to the directory as well.
  4. Allow the UPD port 1194 in your firewall as well. However, this only works if you authorize this option as an administrator.
  5. You can now start your private OpenVPN and use it for your interests. Your files are now protected.
