Connecting Nintendo Switch with LAN - how it works

If you want to play online with the Nintendo Switch, you have to connect the console to the Internet. This works conveniently and wirelessly via WLAN or alternatively with the help of a LAN cable. However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

Connecting Nintendo Switch to the Internet via LAN

In order to go online with Nintendo Switch, for example to play multiplayer or simply surf the web, you need to connect the console to the network. In handheld mode, this works conveniently via WLAN. In TV mode, you also have the option to connect the console to the network via LAN cable in addition to the wireless connection. Since the Switch docking station does not have a direct LAN port, you need a LAN adapter.
  1. Connect the LAN adapter via the USB port of the Switch docking station.
  2. Connect the router and the dock via the adapter with a LAN cable.
  3. Place the Switch in the dock and start the console.
  4. Call up the system settings via the home menu.
  5. Navigate to the category "Internet Settings" in the system settings and call up the item "Internet".
  6. You will now be shown all available Internet connections. Select the LAN connection and activate the option "Connect to the Internet via LAN connection".
  7. The switch then performs a short network test to ensure that the connection is also compatible.
  8. Finally press "OK".
If problems occur during the connection test, you will receive an error code. With the help of the code, you can then determine or narrow down the source of the error.
