Mac hard disk full - How to create memory again

Common symptoms of a full hard disk are long loading times, slow booting and long-lasting installations. Keeping the hard drive tidy and manageably occupied is therefore worthwhile.

Mac Hard Drive Full? - How to find out

If your Mac's hard drive is gradually filling up with files and applications, the first thing you should do is get an overview of your storage space.
  1. Click the Apple menu icon.
  2. Select "About this Mac."
  3. Click "Storage."
  4. You will now see an overview. First options to archive your data you get by clicking on "Manage".

Empty Mac hard drive

About simple steps you can clean up your hard drive and free up memory. Often, many unnecessary and unused files are lying around freely and can be deleted without hesitation:
  • Empty Recycle Bin and Downloads folder
  • Empty browser caches
  • Delete old backups from iTunes
  • Remove photos and other unnecessary files from iTunes
  • Delete any purchased content from iTunes
  • Empty internal recycle bins from applications
  • Delete photos and videos from documents
  • Uninstall unnecessary apps
  • Restart Mac. Mac uses automatic defragmentation on every restart and can sometimes free up hard drive space.
If all steps have not freed up enough memory, you should think about upgrading once. Another SSD in the system provides a lot of free memory, on which not even important system files need to be.

External software

With the help of external tools, your hard drive can be analyzed. You will be shown system folders with particularly much content or memory consumption. You can then delete them and then of course empty the recycle bin.Helpful here is the program "Broom". A free alternative is the program "DiskWave". It offers the same range of functions, but has a not quite as nice interface.
