The gaming year 2021 is still young, but has conjured up its first winners on the scene. Among them, without question, is Valheim, the survival game with Norse mythology. We explain the surprise hit.

Valheim appeared on February 2, 2021 in Early Access and was able to immediately win over a large fan base. There are reasons for this.

Valheim: Survival with many exciting facets

Norse mythology is fascinating - one example is the popularity of streaming series like Vikings. And in the gaming scene, the survival genre has been all the rage for years.

• Valheim combines both, creating a very interesting scenario.
• In it, you land in Valheim and have to fight for survival there. This involves classic survival themes such as food procurement, tool production and base building.
• In addition, you must defend yourself against attacks from mystical creatures.
• In order to learn new recipes, you must explore the world in an increasingly larger radius.
• This journey takes you through the various biomes of the game world. There, in turn, NPC bosses with correspondingly strong rewards waiting for you.
• The world is procedurally generated - so no two maps are alike.
• You must pay attention to factors such as wetness and cold. These affect your courses of action.
• You have the choice of whether you tackle the challenges alone or in co-op mode with other players. A group size of up to ten players is allowed.

PVP is also possible, but is not the focus. Thus, both players must explicitly agree to PVP; griefing is as good as excluded thanks to this regulation. The fact that the graphics of Valheim are not exactly up to the latest standards is quickly noticed, but at the same time means that as many players as possible can enjoy the hit.
