Is the PlayStation 5 backward compatible? This is known

The release of the PlayStation 5 will still be in 2020, but there is still a lack of concrete info. This also affects backward compatibility, but at least there are hints on this topic.

New console, old games: For many console gamers, this is a wishful scenario.

The list of games for the PS5 release is far from complete. Therefore, the question of backward compatibility is all the more important.

PlayStation 5: Backward compatible probably only with PS4 games

An important info on the subject provided the publisher Ubisoft:
  • There it was said that the PlayStation 5 will only support "selected games" of the PlayStation 4.
  • What (and how many) titles it was, however, remained completely open.
  • Also the question of whether actually only PS4 games are compatible, is by no means officially confirmed. However, it is considered quite possible, since it would make sense due to the technical differences to the significantly older generations.
In the meantime, industry experts assume that in the long run, all titles of the PlayStation 4 should also be playable on the new console. Whether this will already be the case at release, on the other hand, is not yet certain, since the porting means additional work. For example, it would be possible that particularly popular titles like FIFA 21 enjoy priority, as they are important for many players and would therefore be very welcome when switching to the PS5.
